A successful Scotland needs a healthy economy and a healthy society. Both depend on having a healthy, well protected environment. The planet’s current ecosystem is our life support system: if we don’t protect it we risk our own survival. We must respect the limits of the planet's environment, resources and biodiversity.
Creating a sustainable Scotland is an ambitious plan, but we can all do our bit. These pages provide links to information and support that will help you to change tomorrow today.
But, if you first need to know more about sustainable development and how we can choose the kind of environment that we want, then go here.

What is SEPA doing?
Sustainable development action plan
We have prepared an action plan, as required by guidance issued to SEPA by the Scottish Executive, which sets out how we will make further contributions in the coming years. It also includes updates on our progress so far.
Of course, our key role as a regulator makes a major contribution to a sustainable Scotland. However, we need to balance environmental, social and economic issues all at once. To see how we plan to do this more effectively, see our Vision for Regulation (5mb PDF file).
Greening SEPA
We recognise that we occupy a unique position in respect of care for the environment and are committed to integrating high standards of environmental responsibility into all of our operations.
Our environmental policy sets out our overall approach to minimising our environment impact. Each year we set a range of targets covering different environmental issues, and our performance is independently assessed.
Visit our Greening SEPA pages to see what we’re doing.
