CLOSED : Guidance on Requirements for Authorisation of
Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities
In 1997, we published guidance on regulating the disposal of low
and intermediate level radioactive waste to specialised facilities
on land. We have now decided to update this guidance because
of developments in law and policy in the UK, revised international
advice and recommendations and also recognition that specific
guidance for near-surface facilities is required. We are
producing this guidance jointly with the Environment Agency of
England & Wales and the Environment and Heritage Service,
Northern Ireland.
The guidance sets out the principles and requirements that we
would expect a developer or operator of a radioactive waste
disposal facility to meet to ensure protection of people and the
environment, both now and in the future.
We are consulting on the updated guidance between 15th May and
1st September 2008.
We have identified a number of questions in the consultation
document, to which we invite you to respond. We would also be
interested in any other matters or concerns relating to the
consultation document that you might wish to draw to our
attention.
