Operations Directorate
The department deals with pollution prevention, mitigation of environmental harm, environmental improvement work, environmental licensing, and technical support. It also manages environmental partnerships, the co-ordination of national regulatory tasks and changes, and the provision of licensing and registry services.
Our main role is to protect Scotland's environment. We do this by being an excellent regulator, assisting business and industry so that they understand their environmental responsibilities and comply with regulations. By implementing good practice they will also be able to realise economic benefits.

Environmental Policy
This area prepares SEPA for the implementation of new EU/Domestic environmental regulation. It does this by working closely with the Scottish Government and other external/internal stakeholders to influence the content of emerging regulation, to ensure the principles of better regulation are fully incorporated. Once regulations are made, the department works with stakeholders to review the effectiveness of implementation measures and make recommendations for improvements.
