Thawing and flooding - update 5
The ongoing thaw of recent days, in
combination with a spell of heavy rain which crossed much of
Scotland overnight and into today (Saturday, 16 January), has
resulted in a rapid rise in river levels across much of Scotland,
especially in the south and east of Scotland where SEPA has issued
seven flood warnings. We also have 18 flood watch messages in force
which extend from the Borders to Caithness and Sutherland.
SEPA is not expecting any further significant
rainfall across the country during the next 12- 24 hours. Although
the thaw of any lying snow is due to continue, we expect river
levels to start to fall during the evening and overnight period.
However, SEPA will continue to monitor the situation closely.
Throughout the next 24 hours there remains the risk of localised
surface water flooding which may be exacerbated by frozen ground
and residual ice blocking the free drainage of surface water.
SEPA monitors rainfall and river levels around the clock, using
this information to update the Floodline
service with flood alerts as appropriate. This information can
be accessed through SEPA’s website at www.sepa.org.uk and also via 0845 988 1188. SEPA
encourages anyone concerned about the possibility of flooding to
use these sources of information and ensure they are prepared and
have plans in place should there be any issues.
