Summer Work, Student Placements, Internships and Work Experience

1. Summer Work

1.1 SEPA has a limited requirement for seasonal work during the bathing waters season, this work is ideally suited to scientific and environmental students. SEPA post these vacancies as they arise on the website at www.sepa.org.uk/vacancies

2. Student Placements

2.1 SEPA recognises the benefits in offering student placement opportunities, but unfortunately the demand for such placements now exceeds the organisational ability to facilitate the placements. On this basis SEPA can no longer facilitate any unsolicited requests for placements. SEPA will continue to build relations with academic institutions with a view to offering placements where there is direct benefit to both organisations. Any opportunities for short-term work are normally advertised in our vacancies

3. Work Experience

3.1 For Health & Safety reasons, SEPA cannot facilitate work experience placements for persons under 16 years of age.

3.2 SEPA regularly receives requests from members of the public and students volunteering for work experience. Due to the nature of the work that SEPA undertakes, we can only consider facilitating those requests that are solicited through an academic institution or a recognised job centre (running a government recognised scheme) and where SEPA has an ongoing relationship.

4. Internships

4.1 SEPA receives more requests for internships than can be accommodated. Requests for internships can only be facilitated when a request has arisen from an organisation with whom SEPA has built a relationship and where there is agreement that it is appropriate for SEPA to facilitate specific requests for an internship. Unsolicited requests cannot be facilitated at this time. Permanent and fixed-term jobs are advertised on the SEPA website and may provide individuals who are successful through the selection process with the opportunity to gain experience.

5. Baseline Recruitment Checks

All preferred candidates for seasonal work, student placements, work experience or internships will be subject to the Baseline Personnel Security Standard process. This process includes the requirement to obtain a Basic Disclosure Scotland Certificate as well as providing references and undergoing health screening. These checks must be completed before a firm offer of employment or voluntary placement can be made. Please note that the cost of the Basic Disclosure Scotland Certificate will not be reimbursed by SEPA.
