SEPA - ISO Standards

Standards make an enormous and positive contribution to most aspects of our lives. They help ensure desirable characteristics of products and services such as quality, environmental friendliness, safety, reliability, and efficiency - and at an economical cost.

ISO standards are voluntary but are developed with the agreement of all participating member countries. They provide standards for good management practice and for services. Details about ISO and the standards it promotes can be found at http://www.iso.org/iso/home.htm.

SEPA's aim is to provide an efficient and integrated environment protection system for Scotland, which will both improve the environment and contribute to Scottish Ministers' goal of sustainable development.

To support this SEPA aspires to principles of several of the ISO standards. We are externally audited against them every year by external auditors from LRQA or UKAS.

SEPA is corporately certificated to the following ISO standards:

  • ISO 9001:2008: The requirements for a  Quality Management System which will demonstrate our commitment to customer satisfaction and meeting regulatory requirements, as well as encouraging continuous improvement of our business systems.
  • ISO 14001:2004: The requirements for an Environmental Management System which will systematically manage our environmental impacts, demonstrate our commitment to the environment and ensure compliance with existing regulations.
  • The scope of our certification to both standards is :

"Provision of integrated, sustainable environmental improvement for Scotland, including monitoring, understanding, advice, regulation and information. Associated support and administration services."

  • We are jointly certificated to both standards by LRQA with Approval Certificate no: LRQ 4006692. Validity and scope of the certificate can be independently checked with LRQA. Email: enquiries@lrqa.co.uk

SEPA laboratories hold Accreditation from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service  (UKAS) for certain tests to the following ISO standard :

  • ISO/IEC 17025:2005 : The requirements for competence to carry out laboratory tests including sampling. Details of accredited tests are given in the Schedule of Accreditation for SEPA.

  • The scope can be found on the UKAS web site : http://www.ukas.org.uk/, selecting Testing then testing labs website by using the SEPA accreditation number 1327.
