North Area Board Membership

Chairman: Sue Walker

Susan Walker has a geography and a civil engineering background.  From 1980 to 1999 she held a number of posts in the National Rivers Authority and subsequently in the Environment Agency.  She retired as Regional Water Manager of the Agency’s North West Region in 1999 to form her own consultancy company which specialises in sustainable and integrated river basin management.  She was a member of the North of Scotland Water Authority from 1999 to 2002.  Susan Walker is currently a Board member of Scottish Natural Heritage, Deer Commission for Scotland and the Cairngorms National Park Authority. She is also a member of the Fisheries (Electricity) Committee.  She has not been politically active in the last five years

Richard Balharry

Richard Balharry was, until 1997, Area Manager of Scottish Natural Heritage and held a number of positions with its predecessor bodies. He was closely involved in the establishment and development of Craig Meagaidh as a National Nature Reserve. He is presently on the committee for Nature Conservation & Countryside, the National Trust for Scotland and is Chairman of the John Muir Trust. He was awarded an honorary degree from Aberdeen University in 1995, and an MBE in 1996, both for services to Nature Conservation.

Elaine Booth

Elaine is the Oilseeds and Non-Food Crops Specialist at the Scottish Agricultural College.  Her work has involved research and consultancy on agronomic, market and environmental aspects of a range of food, biofuel and non-food crop opportunities since the late 1980s.  She is also a partner of Ednie Farms, a family owned farm business, based near Peterhead, which aims to integrate environmental projects, such as the Ugie Wetland Scheme and Rural Stewardship Scheme, within the arable and beef farming enterprises.

Elaine has a PhD from Aberdeen University and a BSc Agriculture (Crop Science Honours).  She is active on a number of relevant agriculture based committees.

Kathryn Conlon

Kathryn Conlon is a chartered chemical engineer with over twenty years’ experience in the oil and gas industries in the UK and overseas. She is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and presently works as a senior consultant with Titan Offshore UK Ltd. in Aberdeen.

Andy Dytch

Andy Dytch has been the General Manager of ILM (Highland) for the past ten years, which is a ‘not for profit’ charitable company delivering a range of social, economic and environmental initiatives across the Highlands. Included in this, is an initiative, which aims to take all the white goods out of the waste stream in the Moray Firth area for either reuse or recycling. The aim of this initiative is to enable the Highlands comply with the European WEEE Directive. Prior to this, Andy was involved in various community based initiatives in Glasgow.

Helen Geddes

Helen is a qualified chemist and environmental manager. She has worked predominantly in the UK paper industry, latterly as the Utilities Manager providing energy and environmental services to the production site: in this capacity also she has represented the UK industry interests on various environmental committees of CEPI – the European industry trade association.  Helen has a keen interest in Scottish access rights and environmental matters as a past vice-president (Access & Conservation) of the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, serving on the Cairngorm Partnership Board and currently is a member of the Cairngorms Local Access Forum. 

In 2004 she returned to the Highlands and has recently established her own company working with small and medium sized businesses in providing a range of environmental and energy expertise.

Stuart Gibb

Stuart Gibb is currently Director of the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) in Thurso. The ERI is part of the North Highland College, one of the academic partners in the UHI Millennium Institute. His role is to build a research portfolio that addresses the contemporary environmental issues that impinge upon the functionality of the Highlands and Islands. Prior to this he has worked with the Plymouth Marine Laboratory and School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia.

William Jamieson

Bill Jamieson was until 1999 Secretary and Financial Controller at North Eastern Farmers Ltd., Scotland’s largest agricultural supply co-operative. Since then he has undertaken various assignments under the Scottish Enterprise Business Mentoring programme and is a non-executive director of a number of organisations. Mr. Jamieson is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Councillor Bruce Luffman

Councillor Bruce Luffman JP is a member of the Administration of Aberdeenshire Council. He is a Board member of the Cairngorms National Park Authority and is also a part owner of a tourism accommodation business in Upper Donside. His professional background is in agriculture and farm diversification. He is Chairman of the South Aberdeenshire Licensing Board and also of the Tourism Committee for the Cairngorms National Park.

David Mackay OBE

Dr David Mackay OBE is Chairman of EnviroCentre, an environmental consultancy company spin off from Strathclyde University. He is President of the Scottish Anglers National Association representing 38,000 anglers, and Chairman of the Deveron, Bogie and Isla Rivers Charitable Trust which involves the local community in improving all aspects and uses of the rivers.

Prior to his retirement David was Director for SEPA’s North Region.

Councillor Ian Ross

Councillor Ross is a member of Highland Council and chairs the Council’s Sustainable Development Select Committee. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters and still practises as a Forestry Consultant. He is a member of the Forestry Commission Advisory Panel and also chairs their Forestry for People Panel. He is a past chair of Voluntary Groups East Sutherland - the Council for Voluntary Service in East and Central Sutherland - and also chairs the Highland Drug and Alcohol Action Team.

David Sandison

David Sandison was associated with Sullom Voe Oil Terminal, Shetland, as both a Project Planner and Quantity Surveyor on a number of projects.  Since 1999 he has represented the interests of fish farmers as General Manager of the Shetland Salmon Farmers’ Association and since 2005, Shetland Aquaculture.  David is currently Company Secretary of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation and sits on the Board of the NAFC Marine Centre.
