The catchment of the Dee-Ken river system in Galloway is one of the largest in the region and presents unique challenges to integrated catchment management planning. It is likely to be classified as a Heavily modified Water Body under the Water Framework Directive. The catchment is host to a wide variety of habitats and their associated wildlife, with many areas under special protected status because of this high quality.
