Climate Change : What can business do?

Here are some simple steps your business can take to help reduce the impacts of climate change from greenhouse gas emissions.

  1. The Energy Savings Trust estimates that 30% of all energy used is wasted. Visit the EST website to carry out a building energy audit to identify areas to reduce waste and cut costs.

  2. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from business activities year-on-year for the next five years. Making a public commitment is a good way of showing staff and customers how seriously you take this issue.

  3. Ensure suppliers meet or exceed your own commitment to minimise greenhouse gas emissions. You can have the greatest impact on the greenhouse gases associated with your products and services if everyone in the supply chain is doing their bit.

  4. Examine ways to reduce the emissions of your transport and fleet vehicles. Simply maintaining vehicle tyres at correct pressures can reduce fuel costs and tyre wear, as well as carbon emissions. www.powershift.org.uk/business/powershift.html

  5. Raise awareness of energy and carbon savings opportunities among employees. Energy efficiency in the home can make an enormous contribution to reducing the impact we are having on the planet.

The UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) helps organisations assess how they might be affected by climate change and how to prepare for its impact. A number of UKCIP publications look at impacts in the UK on transport, water resources, gardens, buildings, archaeology, agriculture and human health.

Government-funded bodies offer free advice on how to put energy and resource savings into practice. The Carbon Trust is an independent company funded by Government to help move the UK lower carbon economy by advising business and the public sector on reducing carbon emissions. See www.carbontrust.co.uk

Envirowise delivers a government-funded programme of free, confidential advice and support to UK businesses on practical ways to increase profits, minimise waste and reduce environmental impact. See www.envirowise.gov.uk
