Current Consultation : The Regulation of Radioactive Waste in the Scottish Offshore Oil and Gas Industry

If telephoning ask for:

Dear

CONSULTATION ON REGULATION OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE IN THE SCOTTISH OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

SEPA is reviewing its regulatory approach to various radioactive waste issues concerning the offshore oil and gas industry.  The last regulatory review was carried out in 1985 and while the primary legislation has not changed significantly, there have been important technological developments and increased interest in radioactive wastes associated with oil and gas production.

We would appreciate your organisation’s help in taking this review forward.  A number of issues relating to radioactive waste in the oil and gas sector have been identified and these are discussed in the attached consultation document.   You are asked for comments on specific issues but we would welcome responses on anything you believe is relevant to this review.

No decisions have been made on changes to regulatory approach and no changes will take effect until responses to this consultation have been considered.

Please telephone SEPA’s Aberdeen office if you want further information or if you would like extra copies of the consultation document.

Yours

David Orr

Specialist – Radioactive Substances

Note: This consultation closes on 7th October 2005
