Waste industry
The management of waste is fundamental to protecting the
environment. However, the industrial activity associated with
managing waste can also result in harmful effects, such as land
contamination, noise pollution and discharges to water.
Any business involved in the transportation or management of
waste must be registered with SEPA. Many of the activities carried
out by waste management businesses require a waste management
licence, waste management licence exemption or Pollution Prevention
and Control permit, all of which are available from SEPA. We can
advise you on the correct documentation needed for your type of
business and can provide you with the necessary application
forms.
SEPA actively supports a reduction in the amount of waste
produced in Scotland and employs a range of statutory powers and
initiatives to make this happen. Businesses found to be operating
without the appropriate licences or in breach of their licences may
face prosecution. Taking the time to source the right advice will
mean that you have all the information you need to ensure your
business is operating legally.
Waste can account for 4% of your business turnover, taking steps
to manage and minimise waste can lead to considerable savings.
For more information about the management of waste, click on the
‘Waste’ menu on the left side of this screen. Licence application
forms are available via the ‘Application forms’ tab at the top of
this screen.
