Flood risk management consultations

Important changes are taking place in the way flood risk is managed in Scotland and your opinions matter.

One way we gather comments and opinions is through consultations.  Responses to these will help Scotland better plan and co-ordinate actions to reduce the impacts of flooding on our communities, the economy and the environment.

Following SEPA's Flooding in Scotland:  A consultation on Potentially Vulnerable Areas and Local Plan Districts, we have submitted proposals to Scottish Ministers.  For more information and to view a copy of the submission, please visit Flooding in Scotland.

Current consultation:

Assessment of flood risk from sewerage systems: A consultation on the form of assessment and areas requiring assessment

SEPA is currently consulting the responsible authorities on the assessment of flood risk from sewerage systems as required by section 16 of The Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009 (the FRM Act).

The FRM Act requires SEPA and the responsible authorities (Scottish Water and local authorities) to work collectively to assess and manage flood risk in a sustainable and plan-led approach. This new approach covers all sources of flooding including sewer flooding. A better understanding of all the causes and consequences of flooding is required to make well informed decisions on how to manage flood risk. Sewerage systems are key components of the sources and pathways of flooding in urban catchments and the assessment of flood risk from sewerage systems is an important step towards a better understanding of flood risk.

The consultation proposes the form of assessment to be carried out under section 16 and shows all the areas that currently require an assessment.

The consultation will take place from Wednesday 18 April 2012 for a period of 4 weeks.
