Benefits of the new approach

The new approach to flood risk management will make sure Scotland can cope with the expected increase in flood risk which is predicted due to climate change causing more intense rainfall, wetter winters and rising sea levels.  Further increasing the risk of flooding is the way we choose to use our land and building on floodplains.

The new approach to flood risk management will make communities more resilient to the impacts of flooding.  It will also result in:

  • Better information about the areas in Scotland most vulnerable to flooding
  • Clear lines of responsibility for implementing actions to manage flood risk
  • SEPA, local authorities and Scottish Water working closer together to coordinate actions to manage flood risk
  • A stronger voice for the public and communities to influence actions to manage flooding
  • Benefits for Scotland's communities, the economy, the environment and our cultural heritage
