The role of your local authority
There are 32 local authorities in Scotland, each with a
responsibility to manage flood risk in their area. Local
authorities are responsible for:
- Preparing and implementing local plans for managing flood
risk
- Managing flood defence schemes
- Inspecting and maintaining bridges and gullies, carrying out
clearance repair works to reduce the risk of flooding alongside
other organisations who have similar responsibilities. For
example, Network Rail is responsible for rail bridges and Transport
Scotland for motorways and primary road routes
- Working with emergency services in response to severe
flooding
- Co-ordinating shelter for people evacuated from homes
