Know your warning codes
SEPA issues flood warnings by using a set of four easily
recognisable codes. All flood warnings are serious, and appropriate
steps should be taken if a warning is issued. Don't wait until the
situation gets worse before you do anything. The better prepared
you are, the better you will cope with the effects of flooding.
In the parts of Scotland where SEPA operates a recognised 'Flood
Warning Scheme' a full four-stage service is available. In areas
where it is not possible to accurately forecast flooding from
rivers or the sea, we provide a general early alert for possible
flooding of all rivers, streams and watercourses across the whole
of Scotland. This early alert is known as 'Flood Watch'.
Flood warning codes

Flood Watch = Flooding possible.
Be aware! Be prepared! Watch out!
A 'Flood Watch' is issued in response to weather, tidal
conditions or river levels, and indicates that flooding may occur
in the next 24 to 48 hours.
If you think your property is at risk of flooding, flood watch
will indicate that vigilance is required. This warning may also
help people who keep livestock or animals, those who plan to
travel, and those who have business premises in the area.

Flood Warning = Flooding expected, affecting homes,
businesses and main roads. Act now!
Flood Warnings are not issued in all areas because there may be
no known risk of flooding or insufficient data available to
accurately forecast a flood. However, if you are issued with a
'Flood Warning':
- move pets, vehicles, food, valuables and other items to
safety
- put sandbags or floodboards in place
- prepare to turn off gas and electricity
- be prepared to evacuate your home
- protect yourself, your family and others that need your
help

Severe Flood Warning = Severe flooding expected, with imminent
danger to life and property. Act now!
Severe Flood Warnings are not issued in all areas because there
may be no known risk of flooding or insufficient data available to
accurately forecast a flood. However, if you are issued with
one:
- be prepared to lose power supplies – gas, electricity, water,
telephone
- try to keep calm, and to reassure others, especially
children
- co-operate with emergency services and local authorities
- prepare for the possibility of evacuation

All Clear
An 'All Clear' is issued when flood water levels have peaked and
receded and flood watches and warnings are no longer in force.
Please note it is still important to seek appropriate advice and
check it is safe to return to your property.
