Groundwater : Legislation : Control of Major Accident Hazard Regulations 1999

These Regulations impose requirements with respect to the control of major accident hazards involving dangerous substances. The Regulations implement Council Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major accident hazards involving dangerous substances.

The Regulations apply to establishments where dangerous substances are present in specified quantities.

The competent authority for the purposes of the Regulations is the Health and Safety Executive and the SEPA acting jointly.

These regulations protect groundwater by requiring the operator to take all measures necessary to prevent major accidents and limit their consequences to persons and the environment.
