Environmental Risk Assessment Manual

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency is required to direct resources to where they are most needed and where they will be most effective in meeting its environmental objectives. SEPA has adopted a risk-based assessment methodology to determine inspection frequencies for licences, authorisations and consents (where inspection is needed).

The Environmental Risk Assessment Handbook consists of methodologies and guidelines that shall be used to determine inspection frequencies for:

  • Waste sites
  • LAPC, IPC and PPC sites
  • COPA consented discharges to surface waters
  • COMAH sites
  • RSA Band C inspections

The individual methodologies are described in the manual. Click here to see a copy of the environmental Risk Assessment manual.

SEPA is currently developing and reviewing these methodologies and where no detail appears under a heading, this means the final version is still being worked on and will be published once available.

SEPA would welcome any views you have regarding the way in which we determine inspection frequencies and if you have any comments or suggestions for improvement, write to Audrey Terry, SEPA, Greyhope House, Greyhope Road, Torry, Aberdeen, AB11 9RD before the 25th July 2005.
