The Habitat Enhancement Initiative (HEI) was developed to focus on SEPA's aims and duties regarding conservation, biodiversity and sustainable development, and to work in partnership with others to protect Scotland's environment.
The HEI promotes the conservation and enhancement of the natural beauty and amenity of inland and coastal waters, and of the land associated with such waters. These environments provide important habitats, supporting a wide range of species. However, these habitats are often subject to a range of threats, particularly pollution, development and poor management practices.
The aim of the HEI is to achieve measurable improvements to the aquatic environment by raising awareness of best management practices, and the provision of information and guidance. Amongst other activities, the HEI is is currently:
- developing guidance documents in partnership with other organisations.
- publishing information leaflets and a regular newsletter.
- establishing demonstration sites and running an award scheme.
- closely involved in Local Biodiversity Action Plans in Scotland.
