Responses to Marine Cage Fish Farming Consultation
Issued on 3 December 1997 - Ref 43/97

SEPA has published a compendium of responses to the major consultation exercise on fish farming in Scotland which SEPA began in April this year.

In the consultation paper, SEPA looked at the main issues associated with the industry, and at the regulatory tools currently available to control it. The document set out SEPA’s recommendations for future policy and practice to regulate the industry, and asked for views on this proposed course of action. Copies were sent to more than 500 organisations and individuals.

The range of views received is wide and should be helpful to those including The Scottish Office, SEPA, the fish farming industry, Local Authorities, the Crown Estate Commissioners, and conservation groups who, within the next few months, will severally and jointly be developing policies for the management and development of the industry.

‘We appreciate the time and trouble taken by the recipients to address the issues and state their views,’ said Professor David Mackay, SEPA’s North Director, ‘It is time for all concerned to agree policies and practices in order to provide a firm foundation for sustainable development into the future.’

SEPA will shortly be publishing a procedures manual which will detail the standardised methods employed in processing applications, issuing consents or refusals under the Control of Pollution Act 1974 and monitoring discharges.

Copies of the Compendium are available, free of charge, from SEPA's Public Affairs office or click for the Website version of the report.
