SEPA Director Receives OBE
Issued on 11 November 1998 - Ref 43/98
Professor David Mackay, Director of the Scottish Environment Protection Agencys North Region, received his OBE at Buckingham Palace last week.
Professor Mackay was honoured for the contribution he has made to protecting Scotlands environment. He has been Director of SEPA North since its inception. Based in Dingwall, he is responsible for the environmental quality of an area from Aberdeen to the Western Isles, and Fort William to Shetland. He is Chairman of SEPAs Fish Farm Advisory Group, which considers the impacts of fish farming on Scotlands environment. In addition, he leads the Team which regulates the UKAEAs nuclear installation at Dounreay in Caithness, a site which has a high public profile and where SEPA has established itself a firm but fair environmental regulator.
Professor Mackay was educated at Stirling High School and at Strathclyde and Paisley Universities. He is currently honorary Professor of Aquatic Environmental Management at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling.
He began his career at the Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory in Pitlochry, then worked for the Clyde River Purification Board where he played an important part in promoting the return of salmon to the Clyde. He was for many years a water pollution consultant with the World Health Organisation, and spent several years with the Hong Kong Government, helping establish its Environmental Protection Agency and advising on the impacts of fish farming. Professor Mackay was General Manager of the North East River Purification Board until SEPA took over its duties in 1996.
Colleagues in SEPA are delighted and proud that Professor Mackay work has been recognised publicly through the award of an OBE.
