SEPA Blocks Fish Farm Expansion Application
Issued on 10 March 1998 - Ref W9803/01
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has refused a consent under the Control of Pollution Act 1974, relating to the proposed expansion of the Lakeland Marine Farm at Ballochmartin Bay on Cumbrae.
"The application, was refused on the grounds that hydrographic data indicated local currents will transport waste materials discharged from the fish farm to the Ballochmartin Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)," explained SEPA Central Divisional Manager, Robert Kerr. "SEPA believes this would represent an unacceptable risk to the natural heritage of Scotland and a nationally important SSSI."
