New Chairman Appointed to
SEPA West Region Board

Issued on 18 March 1998 - Ref W980302

SEPA Board Member, Mr Graeme Gordon OBE, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Board of SEPA West Region. He replaces Mr Brian Fitzgerald who resigned this week intimating the potential for a perceived conflict of interests between his business and SEPA responsibilities.

SEPA Chairman, Professor William Turmeau expressed his regret at losing a valuable member of his Board.

"Brian Fitzgerald has been a driving force in the Agency Board and in the Board of SEPA West. His experience, expertise and integrity have been an invaluable asset to SEPA and I very much regret that we are losing his services."

Graeme Gordon runs a family trout farm in Galloway. He is former Convenor of the Scottish Landowners Federation, Vice Chairman of the former Solway River Purification Board and is a Member of the Advisory Committee to the Institute of Aquaculture.

Speaking at the recent SEPA conference in Dunkeld, he praised the challenge and diversity the West Region Chairmanship invites.

"SEPA West Region presents a broad spectrum of challenges to environmental protection, incorporating such contrasting environments as rural Dumfries & Galloway, the metropolitan central belt areas in and around Glasgow and wild and beautiful Argyll. I am delighted to add this regional role to my current involvement with SEPA as a main board member. I look forward to working with the West Region board and staff, carrying on their excellent work towards making Scotland an even cleaner and better place in which to live."
