Flytipping is the illegal dumping of domestic and commercial waste outside designated waste disposal sites, usually in remote rural areas. To assist in catching and identifying offenders, SEPA North Region and Medivet Ltd have teamed up to create a camera kit that will foil even the flyest of the flytippers.
The Microvision kit is a totally mobile transmitting camera, with sound, that can run off a battery in remote locations. This allows for instant covert surveillance in unexpected places, which is the best way to catch offenders. A self contained video link designed for use with mono or colour provides a substantial cost saving over cable installations. Cable is cumbersome and expensive and can not be used over the long distances which the Microvision kit can cover.
Tom Anderson, Waste Specialist with SEPA North says the camera will prove an invaluable asset and will be used throughout the Highland and Islands by SEPA staff.
"Fly tipping is a problem that the public are becoming increasingly aware of and are not prepared to accept. It spoils the landscape and can cause health and pollution problems. SEPA can take action against people and companies who fly tip, but it is very difficult to prove who did it after the offence has taken place. This new camera kit and 24 hour recording equipment can be sited in an area that has become a regular fly tipping point and record the vehicles and people who are responsible for damaging the environment, and provide evidence for action to be taken."
Anyone who witnesses fly tipping should phone SEPA on their Pollution Hotline 0800 80 70 60 immediately.
