Caird Environmental Ltd Fined a Total of £8,000
Issued on 18 January 1999 - Ref W9902
Caird Environmental Ltd has been fined a total of £8,000 at Airdrie Sheriff Court following a number of breaches of their licence at Hartlouphill Opencast Coal Site under the Control of Pollution Act.
The first charge, which carried a £5,000 fine, related to a period between December 1997 and February 1998 when SEPA Environment Protection Officers identified excessive amounts of suspended solids and ammonia being discharged into a tributary of the Cameron Burn.
The second, carrying a £3,000 fine, related to an incident on 11 February 1998 when mineral solids from the site were discharged into a tributary of the Luggie Water.
"These fines reflect the seriousness of the incidents. These were first offences in terms of water based consents," said Tom McKenzie, Environment Protection Officer. "Nevertheless SEPA will continue to monitor the site and will not hesitate to report any further problems to the Procurator Fiscal."
