SEPA and SNH join forces to promote Sustainable Development

Tricia Henton, Director of Environmental Strategy for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and SEPA Chairman Mr. Ken Collins will be presenting sessions at The Future for the Environment in Scotland: Resetting the Agenda? which is being held on 17 March 2000 at the Royal Society of Edinburgh. .


Ms. Henton will be making a presentation jointly written by herself and Roger Crofts, Chief Executive of Scottish Natural Heritage, looking at Sustainable development in Scotland and what needs to be done to facilitate it. Ms. Henton will examine the basic principles of sustainable development:

· it is a philosophy which demands an integrated view of the world
· it is a framework which recognises importance of environmental systems which underpin life, economic activity and social development
· it recognises that environmental systems must be maintained and enhanced
· it recognises the positive contribution of science and technology in solving problems
· it recognises the need to integrate economic prosperity, social equity and environmental protection
· it provides a framework for linking issues and identifying priorities

Key issues for sustainable development in Scotland, objectives for meeting sustainable development requirements and mechanisms for change are explored. Two particular areas of sustainable development, Sustainable Uplands Management, an SNH managed project and Sustainable Urban Drainage, a SEPA led initiative, will also be discussed.

Mr. Collins will be chairing the Discussion session at the end of the Conference, which will give delegates the opportunity to discuss the issues that will be discussed during the day.
