Bill Furness appointed to SEPA Board
28 March 2000 - Ref 13/00
Local man Bill Furness, former Chair of the Scottish Water and Sewerage Customers Council, has recently been appointed to the main Board of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Mr. Furness worked for British Telecom Scotland for much of his career, becoming the National Manager for BT Scotland.
Mr. Furness also plays an active role in a number of other bodies, including Chairman of the Internet Society for Scotland, member of the Board of the Scottish Council Development and Industry and Chairman of the Scottish Council for Research in Education. He is also Chief Executive Designate of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise, a post he is due to take up on the 3 of April 2000.
In his spare time, Mr. Furness lists his interests as Scotland, travel, Irish Wolfhounds and antiques. After his appointment to the Board, Mr Furness said:
"During my time at the Water and Sewerage Customers Council, I became very aware of the sustained technical and managerial effort reuired to keep our environment clean and safe - and the problems that arise when even small mistakes occur. In a world characterised by population growth and increasing interdependence between countries on environmental matters, the efforts required and maintain a quality environment will inevitably grow and become more complex.
"I am delighted to have this opportunity to help Scotland's national agency to protect and prevent our environment."
