The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) celebrates it fourth birthday by publishing its fifth Corporate Plan today. SEPA was established in 1996 and has worked hard to establish its self as the protector of Scotland's environment from pollution.
This Plan demonstrates SEPA's integrated approach to improving Scotland's environment and highlights the Agency's contribution to sustainable development.
During the period of the Plan, 2000/2001 to 2003/2004, there are a number of new developments that will assist SEPA in its task of delivering effective environmental improvement. In particular, the implementation of the National Waste Strategy: Scotland provides an opportunity to bring about more sustainable waste management practices. The implementation of the EC Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive (96/61/EC) and draft EC Water Framework Directive will also provide significant opportunities for environmental gains and better targeted regulation.
In launching the Plan, SEPA's Chief Executive, Mr Alasdair Paton said:
"In the coming year we will be pushing on with Scotland's National Waste Strategy, launched in December last year, along with other initiatives such as aquatic habitat enhancement, sustainable urban drainage and the national Oil Care Campaign. We will begin implementing the new European legislation on integrated pollution prevention and control and the Water Framework Directive. All of these developments will deliver significant environmental gains in Scotland over the next 10 to 20 years."
Chairman Ken Collins also commented:
"I am impressed once again with the ambitious range of targets that SEPA has set for itself. I am proud to present such a positive plan, the first under my Chairmanship."
