SEPA PUBLISHES 2000 BATHING WATER RESULTS

27 December 2000 - Ref 61/00

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has published its annual report on the quality of Scotland’s bathing waters.

Scottish Bathing Waters 2000 contains the results for each of Scotland's 60 identified bathing waters. It also includes the results from other coastal and inland bathing waters routinely monitored by SEPA, examines trends in compliance and provides background information on each identified water in Scotland.

Despite the general trend in improvement in bathing water quality over the past few years, there continue to be long-term problems with some identified waters. Colin Bayes, SEPA’s Head of Water Policy, said:

"The report highlights that a combination of extensive investment in sewerage system upgrades and an increased adoption of best practice by the agricultural community is required if Scotland’s bathing waters are to achieve full compliance with European bathing water standards".

Printed copies of the report are available from SEPA Public Affairs. The report will appear on this website next week.

The 60 designated bathing waters, with their pass/fail status, are listed below. A Mandatory Pass means good water quality at a level which EU member states must observe; achieving a Guideline Pass requires even higher standards, indicating excellent water quality.
