Maintaining the quality of island life on Orkney, establishing Scotland’s first National Parks and tackling diffuse pollution
17 Dec 2001 - 110/01

The latest edition of SEPA View, the magazine of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), is published today.

Main features in SEPA View 10: A look at a new initiative examining how we can better deal with diffuse water pollution. The Diffuse Pollution Initiative (DPI) will develop a strategy which can be used in SEPA’s everyday business and the DPI team reports on this for SEPA View. Dr Peter Rawcliffe of Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) writes about the creation of Scotland’s first ever national parks. Prime aims explained are the enhancement of natural and cultural heritage, promotion of sustainable use of natural resources and the sustainable social and economic development of the areas’ communities.

With its prehistoric sites and abundant wildlife attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year a clean and healthy environment is vital for Orkney. Caroline Budge spends some time with SEPA staff based there and reports on a variety of projects and routine work done to ensure it stays that way.

SEPA View is a digest of environmental issues, and features not only UK news, but what is happening worldwide. In issue 10 you can also read about:

  • the launch of Floodline
  • Habitat Enhancement awards
  • SEPA’s new communication centre opens
  • ecological designs on the future
  • improving bathing water quality in Scotland
  • cash boost for the River Ythan
  • the latest on Foot and Mouth
  • UK carbon trading scheme
  • Germany phases out nuclear energy
  • San Francisco goes solar
  • reviews on current environmental publications
  • environmental prosecutions
  • the lighter side of the environment in the regular round up “Gaberlunzie”
