Beware! Fly tipping around the old Valentines factory is now being monitored
05 Dec 2001 - 98/01

That's the stern warning being put out today by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Dundee City Council. The large amounts of wastes from households and businesses being deposited illegally on the pavements and boundary of the area previously occupied by Valentines factory will no longer be tolerated. Despite clearances being undertaken by Dundee City Council, the illegal tipping has been continuing for over a year now and the two bodies are now set to take action.

In order to stop further illegal waste deposits, SEPA and Dundee City Council's Planning and Transportation and Environmental Consumer Protection Departments intend to mount an intensive monitoring campaign at the old Valentines factory. Appropriate enforcement action will be taken which could include reporting the offence to the procurator fiscal recommending prosecution.

Illegal depositing of waste - fly tipping - is increasing across Scotland and SEPA and local authorities are working together to address this crime. If a successful prosecution is brought against an individual or company, they can face fines of up to £20,000 or up to 6 months imprisonment, or both.

Colin Anderson, SEPA team leader for Dundee is available for interview - please call Louise Fyfe, Public Relations Officer, on 0131 449 7296 or 07799 477973 to arrange.
