Following the 4 scrapyard fires on the Randolph Industrial Estate in Kirkcaldy earlier this month, SEPA invited the relevant Fife agencies to meet yesterday (Monday 2 December) to discuss their respective roles and responsibilities and develop a multi agency coordinated approach that will reduce the risk of a similar fire in the future. A plan of action was developed that will be implemented over coming weeks. Attending the meeting were representatives from Fife Council, HSE and Fife Fire and Rescue.
In the afternoon, the representatives from each of the agencies met with MSP Marilyn Livingstone and Fife Councillors William Aitken, John Cameron, and Andrew Keddie. The agency representatives addressed the concerns of the Councillors and outlined the action each agency will take.
SEPA Fife Team Leader Ian Buchanan is delighted with the progress: “The intensity of the scrap yard fire in Kirkcaldy took everyone by surprise and there are lessons to be learnt by all parties involved. However, we believe that by working with all the relevant agencies, we can minimise the risk of such fires taking place in the future. This will be a blueprint that can be followed throughout the Kingdom.”
A follow up meeting with the agencies and the elected members will take place in February in order to review progress.
