On Monday 7 July 2003 at Falkirk Sheriff Court, Inveresk PLC pled guilty to discharging trade effluent, namely effluent from a paper making process, on 18 and 30 September 2002 into the River Carron at Carrongrove Paper Mill, Denny contrary to section 30F(3) of the Control of Pollution Act 1974 (as amended). The Company informed the court that it is carrying out upgrading of the plant to prevent a re-occurrence of this type of event. Sentencing was deferred for 3 months to allow SEPA to monitor the situation.
The case was heard after the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) submitted a report to the procurator fiscal in relation to both incidents. A complaint from a member of the public alerted SEPA to the first incident and the Company notified SEPA of the second incident.
Caroline Thornton, Environment Protection Officer for SEPA said: “SEPA will be monitoring site performance and any improvements or upgrading over the next 3 months”.
