Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) Hydrologists in Dumfries and Galloway yesterday (29/07/03) registered record July rainfall for the area.
SEPA rain gauges on the River Nith at Ingleston Farm, near Borgue, recorded over 57mm (2 ¼ inches) in 4 hours, between 2345 and 0345, and at one stage, nearly 35 mm in a single hour. An event like this would be expected only once every 150 years.
Bruce Eriksen, SEPA Hydrologist for Dumfries and Galloway stated,
“Low river levels on the Nith meant there was no threat of flooding to Dumfries homes or businesses last night but rainfall events like this prove that flooding could occur at any time throughout the year and not just in the traditional flooding season October to March. SEPA would encourage anyone living, working or travelling in a flood prone area to contact our Floodline service on 0845 988 1188 or log onto www.sepa.org.uk <http://www.sepa.org.uk> for help and advice on how to cope with flood risk. Its better to act now and be prepared before flooding occurs.”
