The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is embarking on a major consultation on how it can improve the regulatory regimes it currently operates and influence the shape of new legislation.
Businesses and industries in Scotland are subject to a number of legally binding Regulations designed to protect the quality of Scotland’s environment. SEPA has published SEPA’s Vision for Regulation, which is being sent to major stakeholders including regulated industries, pressure groups, local authorities, trade bodies and politicians. It is also available on the SEPA website www.sepa.org.uk. Anyone with an interest in the issues is welcome to respond.
The Vision covers matters such as ensuring regulatory activity, considers economic and social as well as environmental factors and the need for fairness, consistency and legal correctness. It also highlights the need for transparency and accountability in decision making.
Views are being sought on
- whether the principles are comprehensive and cover all the issues that need to be considered
- where is SEPA performing well and where does it need to do more?
- how should the principles be carried through into SEPA’s day to day work?
SEPA Chief Executive Campbell Gemmell said: “SEPA provides a vital public service, protecting the environment and human health from the effects of pollution. We want to set out clear principles to guide our approach to this important work, and we would encourage all of our stakeholders to have their say to help us to develop the way ahead.”
