Arlene Smith, of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency's Thurso office, is retiring at the end of October after nearly 30 years' service. Colleagues, old and new, marked her three decades of commitment with a celebratory dinner on 24 October.
Arlene joined the Highland River Purification Board as a part time clerk in 1976. The office, in the centre of Thurso, had only two staff for many years. In 1996, the river board became part of SEPA and Arlene transferred to the new organisation, which is now based at the business park and is home to 6 permanent staff.
Thurso's senior officer David Robinson said: "All of us who've worked with Arlene over the years have not only enjoyed it, but also marvelled at her diligence and integrity. With so many years' experience, Arlene is extremely knowledgeable about SEPA's work and has been a real help to less experienced members of staff. Her attention to detail is meticulous and legendary, although not as well known as her love of playing computer games during lunch! We all wish her the very best in her retirement."
