The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is urging those who live, work or travel in flood risk areas across the south west of Scotland to be prepared for the possibility of flooding. Up to 40 mm of rainfall has been forecast for parts of this area.
SEPA hydrologists are monitoring weather forecasts and river levels around the clock and will issue further advice through Floodline. Anyone concerned should call the service on 0845 988 1188 or log onto www.sepa.org.uk/flooding.
SEPA currently have 5 flood watches in force covering:
- Argyll rivers and Loch Lomond
- Ayrshire rivers
- Dumfries and Galloway rivers
- Glasgow, Dumbarton and Renfrewshire rivers
- The Scottish Borders
A Flood Watch is a general alert to inform people that there may be a risk of flooding at some locations within a river catchment and that if they live, attend school, or work within or near the area, then they may be affected. If a person thinks that their property is at risk of flooding, Flood Watch will act as a prompt that vigilance is required.
There are a number of very simple measures that home and business owners can take to minimise the threat of flooding.
Key measures to consider are:
- preparing a flood kit comprising key personal documents, waterproof clothing, first aid kit and mobile phone
- keeping a list of emergency contact numbers and details of insurance policies somewhere safe
- storing valuable and sentimental items upstairs or somewhere above the flood line
- obtaining sandbags or other flood protection to block doorways and airbricks
