On Thursday 18 December, at Falkirk Sheriff Court, Inveresk PLC were fined £5,000 for offences committed last year under the Control of Pollution Act.
The offences related to the discharging of trade effluent, namely effluent from a paper making process, on 18 and 30 September 2002 into the River Carron at Carrongrove Paper Mill, Denny contrary to section 30F(3) of the Control of Pollution Act 1974 (as amended). Effluent from their treatment plant was being discharged at levels that were well in excess of permitted levels.
Sentence had been deferred twice after the company confirmed that it had employed the services of an environmental consultant to help them overcome their effluent treatment difficulties. It was confirmed in court that a number of remedial measures had been carried out and further measures were being examined with a view to implementation in the near future.
Caroline Thornton, SEPA Environment Protection Officer for this case, said "SEPA are satisfied with the outcome on this matter. It is hoped that the additional work being carried out at the mill will ensure consistently better effluent quality in the future"
