Area Introduction
Fife Council is the local authority covering the whole of the
Fife
waste area.
The AWP sets out the best practicable environmental option (BPEO) for the management of the area’s MSW. This calls for:
- Preventing waste generation at source
- Increasing segregated kerbside collection of recyclable and compostable materials
- Greater recycling of paper, card, glass, plastic, metal, etc
- More composting of garden waste, kitchen waste and other putrescible wastes
- Energy-from-waste (EfW) or other recovery/treatment technologies (in the longer term)
- Reducing the quantities of waste landfilled.
AWP targets for the area’s MSW are 20% recycling, 10% composting and 70% landfill by 2010. By 2020, it calls for 30% recycling, 25% composting, 15% EfW and 30% landfill. At the present time (2006/7), the combined MSW recycling & composting rate for Fife is now over 30%.
Major funding awards to Fife Council from the Scottish Executive in April 2003 and September 2004 will help to develop the infrastructure necessary to meet the AWP’s targets. Local Waste Aware campaigns will seek to change attitudes to waste.
