3.9 Community Sector Involvement

The community sector can have a significant involvement in methods and solutions for managing wastes in a more sustainable manner. There is a strong history of community action projects in Western Isles. Locally operated and managed community projects also bring social benefits through creation of employment and social inclusion. The success of such projects will be a key determinant in delivering BPEO.

The Recycling Advisory Group Scotland (RAGS) is currently putting in place measures to support the development of a Scottish Community Recycling Network. The Western Isles WSAG welcomes these measures and recognises their strategic importance.

Action 19
Develop and support community-led recycling initiatives in partnership with the RAGS Community Recycling Network.

The use of financial incentive schemes (e.g. Recycling Credits) has proved extremely successful in encouraging community participation in recycling initiatives. The WSAG has agreed that this should be a key aspect to achieve the level of participation required to deliver the BPEO.

Action 20
Develop and promote the use of financial incentive schemes to encourage community-led recycling activity.
