In 1999 the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) published the National Waste Strategy for Scotland (NWS). Driven by a combination of European Legislation, environmental pressures and public expectation. The strategy outlines how Scotland can set about decreasing the amount of waste being landfilled and increase the amount being reused and recycled. The NWS will help Scotland move towards more sustainable waste management practices, by reducing the quantity and hazardous state of the waste and increasing the amount of value recovered.
This document not only outlines the key European and UK legislation driving the process but also notes the key players, which will enable Scotland to meet the statutory landfill diversion targets and voluntary recycling targets. You are a key player and the NWS provides an opportunity for you to put your views forward on how you think Scotland can best manage the waste you produce and move up the waste hierarchy.
