Waste Prevention Action Plan

Following the consultation on Preventing Household Waste in Scotland , SEPA and the Scottish Executive have published the Waste Prevention Action Plan and a Workstream plan detailing who will carry out activities outlined in the action plan. 

The Action Plan aims to halt the growth in household waste arisings by 2010 and initially contain 20 targeted actions to help achieve this.  The action plan is a living document however and is subject to regular review. New actions may be added or old ones amended to help meet these targets.

The Action Plan was developed with the help of a Waste Prevention Expert group. The members of the Expert Group are:

The Action Plan was developed based on outcomes of the consultation and input from the Expert Group and covers the roles of the following players:

  • Manufacturer - Product design and labelling
  • Retailer - Product marketing and selling
  • Consumer - Waste aware shopping habits
  • Householder - Reuse, home composting
  • Community sector - Refurbishment and community composting schemes
  • Local authority - Education, support of community sector, collection restrictions
