Training

Work is underway in a range of sectors to identify the training and skills needed to meet the targets outlined in the National Waste Plan. A range of programmes already exist in the formal education, public and professional sectors.

The Sector Skills Council is working with a range of stakeholders, including SEPA, to identify existing skills in relation to waste management. This work will go on to identify any gaps in provision and will look at how these could be filled. Updates on this work will be available on this site.

SEPA Waste Aware Course

SEPA has developed, in conjunction with the Open University, a self study introductory course on waste. The course is now available in six stages, and can be studied at your leisure. As you progress through the course and you come across any questions for us please contact via our Mailback Form.

Public participation is essential if we are to manage our waste in a more sustainable way. By completing this course you will be equipped with a sound understanding of waste management in Scotland ; the challenges we face; and what you can do to make a difference.

More Info: Distance learning courses from the Open University.

CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate

The CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate has been designed for employees who have responsibilities for dealing with waste in companies, organisations, and authorities that produce waste as part of a manufacturing, retail or service process.

The aims of the one day course are to provide an introduction to waste management and to provide the knowledge, skills and understanding to improve the management of waste.

Waste Minimisation Programme

SEPA has its own dedicated waste minimisation team who are the key contacts for business waste minimisation work within SEPA.  SEPA is a key partner in establishing and funding a variety of sector and geographically focused waste minimisation projects throughout Scotland, in partnership with industry, Envirowise, the Energy Savings Trust, local enterprise companies, Scottish Water and local authorities.  This work demonstrates substantial cost savings and improved environmental performance for participating companies. Projects include consultancy-led waste minimisation clubs, environmental business forums and local business support initiatives. Details of these projects and general resource efficiency advice can be found at www.sepa.org.uk/wastemin
