Welcome to The Network

Welcome to April’s edition of the Network News and thanks to the Network for inviting me to Guest Editor and help put together this issue focussing on Composting!

The first week in May is Composting Awareness Week and there are many events happening throughout Scotland to promote composting and the use of compost. I hope there is an event in your area you can go along to and join in the fun, learn and enjoy yourself! The Composting Association: Scotland has been working with many different organisations to promote Composting Awareness Week.

There are lots of really good community, school and home composting initiatives throughout Scotland and these all help contribute to the overall government targets to reduce the amount of biodegradable wastes that end up in landfills. The Network has been out and about to speak to a range of different people involved in composting from home composters (including my future father-in-law!) to those running projects at school, work and in the community, to gain an insight into their experiences and show you how easy it can be to get involved! Participating in your local scheme not only goes a long way to helping Scotland meet it’s targets but you could see some really great results in your garden!

In addition to all the information on composting, this edition is packed with news, updates, resources and information.  You can find out about the new waste education mapping study SEPA is undertaking this year and the wide range of training courses that BTCV Scotland now offer on environmental education and leadership, not to mention updates from all the areas keeping you up-to-date with what’s happening locally.

The next edition of the Network News will focus on sustainability and resource use issues.  So please get in touch with the Network with details of what’s happening near you.

Thanks and happy composting!

Jenny
