FOREWORD
There’s a bit of a watery feel to this issue of SEPA View as we explore various issues and stories relating to the sea, coasts and rivers. Our lead story focuses on the fascinating subject of carbon capture that’s being mooted in a potential project in the North Sea. The concept is controversial and we have tried to set out some of the pros and cons of carbon capture in the article. It may not, as one of our contributors says, be a ‘magic wand’ for dealing with climate change but it certainly merits exploration. If you have views on the subject, please write to SEPA View to let us know.
We continue the ‘watery’ theme with the latest progress on implementation of the Water Framework Directive in Scotland, and in an article looking at how a successful project in Nigg Bay in the Highlands is helping restore saltmarshes, a habitat in need of protection in the UK. And finally, there’s the launch of the WaterSense campaign to raise awareness of what you put (and shouldn’t put) down your drains.
It’s been said several times before, but is worth repeating: taking a more sustainable approach to your lifestyle not only helps the environment but also saves you money. The feature on pages 12-14 looks at how some Scottish companies are doing their bit and saving huge amounts of cash in the process. We also show how small to medium sized businesses can cut their hazardous wastes. But we turn the spotlight on ourselves too, as our feature on page 23 details how SEPA is doing in its continued efforts to reduce emissions and waste.
This issue also sees a slight change in design but don’t worry, if you’re a regular reader of our education pages normally in the middle of the magazine, they’ve simply been moved to the back and not removed altogether!
Finally, you’ll see from our Green Tips on page 25 that we’re getting into the Christmas spirit with some ideas on how you can have a great festive season, but still think about the environment. We hope you have a very enjoyable Christmas and a happy New Year!
