FOREWORD

The environment and health, the focus of this edition of SEPA View, is a truly multi-disciplinary area – our health, indeed the nation’s health, is the result of a multitude of interactions between genetics, diet and lifestyle, social and cultural environments and, importantly for SEPA, the physical environment.

Achieving a healthy population is, in my view, an impossible task without a healthy physical environment. Everyone has the right to a healthy environment. A poor environment is often linked to poor health. And we are not just talking about the direct physical impacts such as the effect pollutants may have on health, but also the psycho-social impact perhaps from feeling unable to do anything about it. Changing attitudes takes time, but the environment, I am pleased to say, is moving up the health agenda, as health is moving up the environment agenda.

SEPA Chairman
