Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE)
We work together with the Environment Agency, Northern Ireland Environment Agency and the Food Standards Agency on the radiological monitoring of food and the environment, and in publishing the results. The latest Radioactivity in Food and the Environment report is the sixteenth report in the series and the ninth publication that all four organisations have produced in partnership.
Our report aims to provide an in-depth assessment of radioactivity in food and the environment in the UK and the public's exposure to radiation. The report focuses on key information that demonstrates both that food remains safe and that the public's exposure to ionising radiation is within legal limits.
The Food Standards Agency has overall responsibility for food safety throughout the UK. SEPA, the Environment Agency and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (collectively referred to as the Environment Agencies in this report) are responsible for environmental protection and regulation in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland respectively.
The report brings together the results of radiological monitoring carried out by each of our organisations during 2010, providing one overall detailed set of information. It also means that we can assess the total amount of radiation the public is exposed to at the 39 nuclear sites around the UK.
More information on our radioactive assessments is available here.
