Sites in operation

SEPA is responsible for regulating the disposal of radioactive waste from nuclear activities in Scotland. We work with the following operating nuclear sites:

  • HMNB Clyde
Located 25 miles north west of Glasgow, HMNB Clyde consists of the naval base at Faslane and the arms depot at Coulport.

  • Torness
Situated on the east coast of Scotland, near Dunbar, Torness Power Station is owned by British Energy and has been in operation since 1988.

  • Hunterston B
Sitting on the Hunterston Peninsula of the Ayrshire coast, Hunterson B is owned by British Energy.

  • Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment (NRTE)
Operated by the Ministry of Defence (Procurement Executive), Vulcan NRTE is located next to the Dounreay site. The impact of its discharges is considered along with those from Dounreay: More on Dounreay

A group called the Nuclear Industry Liason Group (NILG) also provides a forum for discussion between nuclear site operators and the UK environment agencies.
