Non-nuclear industry
Organisations and businesses that use radioactive substances,
and are not on nuclear licensed sites or equivalent, are
collectively known as the non-nuclear industry. These may typically
be hospitals, universities and industry, using radiation for:
- diagnosing and treating disease
- controlling industrial processes
- preventing static electricity
- industrial radiography
- scientific research.
Regulation
SEPA sets specific limitations and conditions under which
radioactive substances can be used, stored and disposed of. This is
to ensure that potential effects to human health and the
environment are minimised. Non-nuclear industries must apply to
SEPA for:
- a registration to keep or use radioactive substances in
Scotland
- an authorisation to accumulate and dispose of radioactive
waste.

The Scottish Non-Nuclear Industries Liaison Group (SNNILG)
This group meets twice a year to facilitate communication
between non-nuclear industries, SEPA and other regulators. Chaired
by SEPA, the group raises any issues related to the regulation of
radioactive substances. It also consults with and informs
non-nuclear industries on matters relating to the keeping, use and
disposal of radioactive substances.
