Regulation
We regulate three types of facility:
- licensed nuclear sites and similar facilities such as power
stations, naval bases and research facilities
- non-nuclear sites such as hospitals, universities and
industry
- sites that use 'closed' sources (ie material stored in a
protective container), such as paper mills and combine
harvesters.
SEPA sets specific limitations and conditions under which
radioactive substances can be used, stored and disposed of. This is
to ensure that potential effects to human health and the
environment are minimised. Non-nuclear industries must apply to
SEPA for:
- a registration to keep or use radioactive substances in
Scotland
- an authorisation to accumulate and dispose of radioactive
waste.
Applying for your licence
Any organisation requiring a registration or
authorisation for using radioactive substances in the non-nuclear
industry will need to complete and submit an application form.
Details of where to send completed forms is included on the
form.
The forms are available from Application
forms, radioactive substances section.
