Our radioactivity specialists are based in Aberdeen, Dingwall, East Kilbride, Edinburgh and Stirling. There is a specific team dealing with Dounreay, but the other specialists deal with a range of sites:

  • North Sea Offshore Installations
  • Torness nuclear power station
  • Rosyth Royal Dockyard
  • HM Naval Base Rosyth
  • Chapelcross nuclear power station
  • Hunterston 'A' nuclear power stations
  • Hunterston 'B' nuclear power stations
  • HM Naval Base Clyde (Faslane & Coulport)
  • SUERC research centre
  • Small users (e.g. hospitals, universities, industrial sites)

All of the offices also provide support in the regulation of premises registered to keep or use sealed sources.



Dounreay Team

The Dounreay Team is based in Dingwall. The work of the team is focused on the regulation of operators that occupy the Dounreay site:

  • UKAEA
  • AEAT
  • HMS Vulcan

The team also regulates small users of radioactivity in the Highlands and Islands area and provides support in the regulation of premises registered to keep or use sealed sources.

Policy and guidance

Specialists in our Corporate Office co-ordinate SEPA's responses to consultations on new legislation and policies regarding radioactive substances, and advise on the impact that they may have on SEPA's business.

They are responsible for:

  • Decommissioning principles and policies
  • Input into waste management policy
  • Guidance on and interpretation of Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO)
  • Guidance on and interpretation of Best Practicable Means (BPM)
  • OSPAR and the National Discharge Strategy
  • Developing methodologies to assess the impact of waste disposal
  • Low Specific Activity scale/Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material
  • Advising the Scottish Executive on EURATOM Treaty Article 37 submissions
  • Transfrontier shipment of radioactive materials and waste



Environmental monitoring and assessment

Another group of specialists is responsible for monitoring radioactivity in the environment and assessing its impact, along with a range of other functions:

  • Environmental monitoring programme for radioactivity
  • Publishing Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE) reports
  • Habits survey programme
  • Maintaining the Radiological Monitoring Database
  • Reporting data to OSPAR Commission and to EC
  • Dose assessment methodology
  • Radioactively contaminated land
  • Input into other forums on environmental crime relating to radioactivity
  • Being prepared for nuclear emergency
